Located 22km south of Rethymno, Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a natural wonder spanning 3km in length. It stands as one of the most breathtaking attractions in Rethymnon prefecture, captivating visitors with its awe-inspiring beauty. Beginning from the village of Koxare, the gorge winds its way between the towering peaks of Kouroupa (984m) and Koules of the Xiro Oros range (676m). The immense cliffs, reaching heights of 600 meters, are adorned with openings and caves, serving as habitats for a diverse array of fauna species.
Exploring the Gorge
A paved road traverses the gorge, providing access to its remarkable sights. By following the steps along the Koxare – Asomatos route, visitors can descend to the gorge’s bottom, where the charming church of local saint Nicholas Kourtaliotis awaits. The Kourtaliotis springs, located near the chapel, are a delightful attraction within the gorge. Below the springs lies the spectacular Kourtaliotis waterfall, where a powerful cascade of water flows through a narrow, dark section of the gorge. Adventurous souls can reach the waterfall by swimming from a lower level of the river. From there, one can trek along the river to the Megalos River bridge and continue on to the iconic palm-fringed beach of Preveli.

The region surrounding Kourtaliotiko Gorge is of immense ecological significance, particularly for endangered birds of prey. It serves as a vital breeding ground for species such as vultures, Golden Eagles, and Bonelli’s Eagles, with one of the last breeding pairs in the Balkans found here. The area’s strategic location, bridging the White Mountains and the central Crete mountains, contributes to its importance for avian conservation.
The gorge boasts exceptional aesthetic, biological, and ecological value, with clusters of Cretan Date Palm trees adorning its slopes. Rich vegetation thrives within its confines, while the river estuary is home to sand dunes and formations of Posidonia, a protected marine plant species. Notable animals in the region include the tortoise and the local freshwater snake.
